It’s a suitcase I’m all too eager to pack: Short sleeved shirts, flips flops and a touch of sunscreen.

Adios, winter. Hello to spring in America’s Finest City, San Diego!

While many parts of the country linger in the “shoulder season” of melting snow and mud, San Diego is bathed in sunlight, with flowers abloom. The crisp, salty morning air and the excitement of young kiddos running through the sand always brings a smile to my face.

I have so many wonderful memories here as a child, and then a college student. After all these years I’m still in awe of just how much there is to see and do.

San Diego is simply the perfect place to shake off that winter chill and reconnect with loved ones for a fabulous spring vacation.

First thing’s first: Spring’s official commencement is in full display at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. Take a walk through more than 50 acres of gorgeous Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers and learn the rich history of this spectacular property. You can even take home bulbs to plant in your own yard.

The gardens in Balboa Park are another colorful adventure not to be missed. You’ll find a series of beautifully landscaped gardens, ranging from cacti to palms and flowers. The Botanical Building and Lily Pond is one of the most photographed scenes in the park and surely deserves a family photo.

Another great spring outdoor activity is whale watching. While you can typically see whales year-round, springtime marks the second half of the grey whale migration season. Mamas will give birth in the waters off Mexico and then migrate with their young back to Alaska. What a sight to see!

The San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park are always an excellent choice this time of year. Through early May, the park offers a spring safari featuring a butterfly jungle. With an array of fun activities and restaurants at both venues, it will certainly be a magical day in the sun.
