Summer in San Diego

It’s that peaceful mid-day hour when the sun pierces through what’s fondly known as June Gloom and gives way to a stunning, vibrant coastline.

“California’s Beach City” boasts 70 miles of gorgeous shoreline. The U.S. Weather Bureau describes San Diego’s weather as “The closest thing to perfect in America.” What’s more, every beach community has a distinct feel all it own.

If you’re traveling with family, a great place to start is Mission Beach. Belmont Park is home to the historic Giant Dipper Roller Coaster. It’s one of the final two wooden roller coasters still up and rolling on the west coast! The amusement park is right at the boardwalk, with rental shops and restaurants all around. Mission Beach truly is a one-stop shop for a loaded beach day.

Another fabulous and yet wildly different experience is a day (or several!) in La Jolla. The area is quieter than other beach communities, and offers more upscale dining and shopping options.

My personal favorite is La Jolla Cove. You can enjoy a beautiful al fresco brunch and then catch the chatty sea lions and seals basking in the sun. I also highly recommend a kayaking tour of the La Jolla Caves. You’ll surely find leopard sharks this time of year, while learning the rich history of these magical waters.

As the clock ticks toward sunset, head over to Sunset Cliffs (sandwiched between Point Loma and Ocean Beach). While water access is limited, it offers striking views of sea caves and impressive cliff formations. Sundown over the water doesn’t get better than this!
